Johnny Depp Sports a Woman’s Engagement Ring
Johnny Depp is engaged. And he’s not afraid to show it.
The 50-year-old actor was seen at a recent press conference wearing a diamond engagement ring on his left ring finger. His fiancee, Amber Heard, was also seen wearing her ring.
Depp, a notably private celebrity, originally purchased his ring for Heard, but sources say she found it “too big for her.” Depp began wearing the original ring and purchased another for his betrothed.
But Depp has actually gone beyond just wearing the ring. During the Beijing press conference for his movie Transcendence, the star reportedly held his left hand up to his face quite often, deliberately drawing attention to the ring.
While Depp’s sense of fashion has always run a little counter to mainstream ideas, the trend of men’s engagement rings is actually gaining ground. As marriage equality becomes a reality in state after state, jewelry stores are catering more and more to a growing clientele of male ring-wearers.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star seems much more interested in the symbolism of the ring, rather than in any particular style label associated with certain types of jewelry, referring nonchalantly to the engagement ring on his hand as “a chick’s ring”. While it is yet to be see if the general public will accept a change in engagement and wedding rings like this, it might end up being another instance of a Hollywood star setting a new trend.
“Johnny Depp is certainly pushing the envelope,” says Jonathan Mervis, Chief Growth Officer at Mervis Diamond Importers. “We’ve had clients do this in the past who like jewelry and want to wear a diamond, but we’re not seeing a mainstream push towards this. We’ve come to call it the ‘mangagement ring’. We know that jewelry is an intensely personal thing, and whatever makes the client feel good, we’ll help them do it.”
Is Depp a trend-setter? Will his choice in bling result in men around the world donning engagement rings from their fiancees?
