Duggar Daughter from ’19 Kids and Counting’ Took Three Pregnancy Tests Before Big Reveal
Jill Duggar, the 23-year-old newlywed star of the TLC series 19 Kids and Counting, has recently revealed that she and her husband, Derick Dillard, are expecting their first child.
The star told gossip rag Us Weekly that she was “very surprised” to learn that she was expecting. After noticing a late period, she took two pregnancy tests that both came back negative.
After waiting a while longer, she took another test — this one positive.
“We were really surprised when we got that positive test,” Duggar told reporters, “but of course we were really excited.”
Duggar also noted that she and her husband, whom she married just three months ago, would have been less surprised if they had seen a positive result on the first tests.
In fact, Duggar almost didn’t take that third pregnancy test until one of her eight sisters, 20-year-old Jinger, urged her to.
“She was like, ‘You know, mama has a bunch of pregnancy tests upstairs. You should take one of hers,'” Duggar recalled.
When it comes to some pregnancy tests, the third time’s the charm.
“There are several factors that can affect the accuracy of a pregnancy test, so taking multiple tests at home is not unusual,” says Barbara Singer, President of CareNet of DuPage. “Health care professionals and other trained personnel in the industry can counsel women on how to get an accurate result.”
And was husband Derick there when she took the test? “Absolutely. He was thrilled,” Duggar said.
The couple did experience some confusion, however, given the symbols on the tests. The first two tests, said Duggar, were supposed to contain a plus sign; the third was simply a line, which led the couple to at first think the test was negative.
How did they react when they found out? Duggar stated that the couple was “super excited… We prayed together, and thanked God for this new little life.”
But the couple hadn’t made any official announcements just yet, and in their excitement, they left the pregnancy test in the trash at parents Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar’s house.
After a text from Michelle about the discarded test, the couple later decided to reveal the news in person.
