Mormon University Bans Same-Sex Greeting Cards

cardIn light of all the recent progress the nation’s gay community has made, a Mormon university in Utah has caused a slight backpedal in advancements in equal rights for same-sex couples.

Hallmark recently launched a campaign that printed same-sex marriage greeting cards because after all, marriage cards exist for different sex couples, so why not include same sex? Unfortunately the same-sex cards were pulled from the shelves of Bringham Young University’s bookstore on the grounds that the store is own by the Mormon church.

The Mormon religion does not support same-sex marriages and states that it is not in line with the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The card company giant is one of the big supporters of gay marriages and was quick to capitalize on the movement by creating same-sex marriage cards. Hallmark is big proponent of legalizing these marriages across the country and as a result has stocked bookstore shelves with more inclusive cards. They reached Bringham Young’s bookstore on Tuesday.

That day, they were on sale to students and residents of the area. Employees seemed not to bat an eye about putting the cards up for sale at the bookstore, yet a university spokesperson said that they had been in the wrong for displaying the cards and had them pulled off the shelves on Wednesday.

Records show that the university bookstore will no longer be receiving the same-sex marriage cards which read “Mr and Mr” and “Mrs and Mrs.”

Those looking for these cards may need to opt for custom photo greeting cards instead, because the university will not be accepting these Hallmark cards any time soon. Those looking to create cards can use digital photos while incorporating their own “Mr and Mr” and “Mrs and Mrs” titles.

“This was just someone stocking the shelve who wasn’t aware,” said university spokeswoman Carri Jenkins. “We’ve been able to work with them.”

The university was first made aware of what was stocked on their shelves after photos of the cards were posted on social media sites. There are nearly 240 billion photos uploaded on Facebook right now, and many of them include depictions of sensitive topics such as same-sex marriage.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints owns Bringham Young University — both of which are against same-sex marriages and are major donors to campaigns and organizations who seek to ban same-sex marriage across the nation.
